Illinois is rich with ghost stories, but a few tales rise above the rest for their staying power and spine-tingling detail. Following our deep dive into Resurrection Mary, here are two more bone-chilling legends from the state that refuse to die.
Bachelor's Grove Cemetery: A Portal to the Paranormal
Tucked into the Rubio Woods Forest Preserve in Midlothian, Illinois, lies Bachelor's Grove Cemetery—a small, overgrown graveyard that has become a magnet for the supernatural. Despite its peaceful appearance by day, it’s one of the most haunted places in the country.
The cemetery dates back to the 1800s and has long been abandoned. The gravestones are cracked and crooked, and the surrounding woods feel unnaturally quiet. But it's the reports of spectral sightings that have cemented Bachelor's Grove in paranormal infamy.

Visitors describe glowing orbs, phantom figures, and unexplainable cold spots. One of the most famous ghostly apparitions is the “White Lady,” often seen sitting on a headstone in a white dress, cradling a baby in her arms. Others have witnessed a ghostly farmhouse that appears and disappears at will.
"I saw the house myself," claimed a 2020 visitor during a paranormal tour hosted by Windy City Ghosts. "It was like something out of time—wooden, glowing faintly. But when I pointed it out to my group, it vanished. There was nothing there."
Investigators have picked up strange EMF readings, photos showing misty forms, and recordings of disembodied voices whispering among the trees. With consistent reports spanning decades, Bachelor's Grove remains a must-visit for ghost hunters and thrill seekers.
The Murphysboro Mud Monster: Illinois' Bigfoot Nightmare
In the summer of 1973, the quiet town of Murphysboro, Illinois, was shaken by a string of sightings of a terrifying creature. Described as a hulking, 7-foot-tall beast covered in matted, white hair, the Murphysboro Mud Monster had red eyes and a stench so bad it made people gag.
The first reported sighting came from two teenagers parked near the Big Muddy River. They claimed the creature approached their car, howling and reeking of decay. Over the next several weeks, multiple residents came forward with similar encounters, and the local police launched a formal investigation.

“I remember the smell more than anything,” said local resident Frank Thayer in a 2003 interview with Southern Illinois Ghost Lore. “It was like rotten eggs and wet dog. Whatever it was, it wasn’t human.”
Tracks were found—large, three-toed prints—and plaster casts were taken, but no conclusive evidence ever emerged. Sightings tapered off, but the legend never died.
Today, the Murphysboro Mud Monster has a cult following among cryptid enthusiasts. It’s featured in documentaries, podcasts, and even has its own local festival. While no one has seen the creature in decades, many believe it’s still out there in the woods, watching.
A Legacy of Fear
From haunted cemeteries to swamp-dwelling beasts, Illinois doesn’t just have ghost stories—it has living legends. Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, there’s no denying the power these tales have over the imagination. They speak to our deepest fears: the unseen, the unexplained, and the unknowable.
So if you ever find yourself near the woods of Midlothian or the riverbanks of Murphysboro... keep your eyes open. And maybe don’t go alone.
